Irish Single Malt Whiskey 22 yo 1991 (46,6%, The Nectar of the Daily Drams & La Maison du Whisky 2014, rum cask #10657)

Nose: starts more waxy, much more rummy as well. The fruits are just as tropical, but majbe a tad greener and fresher. Green mango, white peaches. Clear herbal notes as well (especially mint, some thyme as well). Littlemillian grapefruits. On the nose, I prefer this one over its older brother. The rum seems to work better...

One of the standout Masterclasses at The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show saw the launch of Gordon & MacPhail’s new Private Collection Ultra series – a range of four single-cask whiskies, each selected by a branch of the third and fourth generations of the Urquhart family.

It’s that time of the year again, when all the major bourbon and rye whiskey producers release their limited edition whiskeys, and consumers scramble to find a bottle before they disappear. The headline Masterclasses at The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show are guaranteed to be special. This year’s line-up included a rare chance to taste six whiskies from legendary closed distillery  Brora , in the epically titled Aurora Brorealis , led by Diageo whisky ambassador Colin Dunn.

Islay Region – 58.3% ABV – £79 (£66 ex. VAT, $106 for those of us in the US of A)

Here we have a Kilchoman distilled in 2009 that spent 4.5yrs in first fill bourbon then 4mos in a PX sherry cask.  Bottled at full cask strength, this cask rendered a total of only 270 bottles, all of which were bottled at 58.3% ABV.

In 2011, I visited Templeton, Iowa, to cover this hot rye whiskey that Al Capone supposedly liked. At the time, I knew they were purchasing bulk whiskey from what was then called LDI, the former Seagram’s facility that gave the world beautiful 95% rye mashbills, but I had never approached the company about this. Going into the interview, I half expected them to be confrontational.
