Irish single malt 1991 (Liquid Library)

Liquid Library - new labelThe Whisky Agency ’s Liquid Library series has a redesigned label. The old minimalist white / orange label is gone and replaced with a bamboo-coloured label featuring exotic animals. I’m not sure whether this is a permanent style or a theme that will change each time a new set is released.

We’re trying an undisclosed Irish single malt distilled in 1991 . Of Ireland’s distillers, only Bushmills and Cooley produce single malt whiskey.

Why is my Facebook filled with neknominate videos?

As someone who is quite heavily involved in the drinks industry I always feel a certain sense of responsibility and obligation when around alcohol. A lot of the time this is simply ensuring that folk who attend my tastings don’t knock their whisky back in one go and move on swiftly to the next. Perhaps [...]...

Billy Walker of BenRiach Distillery — in 140 or Less

Another in our occasional series of Tweet-style interviews. As always, it’s 140 characters or less (we don’t count the spaces) in the answers from the CEO of BenRiach Distillery.

Author - Caroline DewarWhat’s the view from your window at HQ?

Edinburgh airport. Unfortunately, I don’t just get to see the planes – I hear them too.

But I understand you’re up at The Glendronach today…

Yes, it’s looking fantastic. Weather staggeringly good for the time of year.

You’re originally a chemistry graduate. Did you choose the whisky industry or fall into it?

I chose it, but a bit of inevitability, coming from Dumbarton,...

Glen Keith 1992 (Whisky Agency)

Glen Keith 1992 (Whisky Agency)The latest series from The Whisky Agency is nicknamed Old Times Diving . On the labels we see people with antique diving helmets and old-style oxygen systems.

Contrary to previous series – that always tried to combine whiskies of different genres and with different flavour profiles – the new series revolves around ‘fruitiness’. We can’t be against fruits, can we? There’s a Glenturret 1980, Ben Nevis 1995, an undisclosed Irish malt 1988 and this 21 years old Glen Keith 1992 . All ex-bourbon if I’m not mistaken.

DISCUS Briefing Confirms Surging Growth of American Whiskey

Author - Lew BrysonAt the annual Distilled Spirits Council of the United States ( DISCUS ) industry review on Tuesday, februari 4, the usual graphs and numbers on domestic sales of distilled spirits and export sales of American spirits were presented, and they told a great story about American whiskey producers. American whiskey is solidly on its way back, after thirty years of steeply declining sales. (see graphs 1 and 2). I started writing about whiskey in the mid-1990s, and much of what there was to write about back then was how the decline in whiskey sales was slowing down (I referred to...

Dramboree 2014

It doesn’t matter who are, where you’re from and what you’re into but we all have our geeky little obsessions that even those closest to us might not understand. You know what? Lets just be honest-they don’t understand. What they probably do is tolerate. They don’t know why you spend hours of your free time [...]...

Paul John Brilliance

Now that Amrut has straightened the path for Indian whisky, Paul John is quickly gaining recognition.

The company has been running since 1992, but their single malt production didn’t start until 2008. Distilled in Goa in copper pot stills, two single cask releases were introduced in 2012. They’re now followed by two regular expressions: Paul John Brilliance (unpeated) and Paul John Edited (a combination of peated and unpeated spirit). Brilliance is matured in ex-bourbon casks and around 3-5 years old.

We already know Indian barley (Himalayan 6-row grain) and the extreme climate can produce an attractive “high-pressure-cooked” whisky that is...

Travellers 2005 (Whisky Agency)

Travellers Liquors is a distillery in Belmopan, Belize. They have a whole range of rums, brandies, vodka, gin…  I must admit I had never heard of them, but apparently they have 60 years of experience as importers / blenders and 25 years as distillers.

Travellers produces double-distilled rum in column stills, which is aged in charred casks. Their best known brands are One Barrel, Five Barrel and Don Omario. This one is a single barrel filled in 2005 .

AnCnoc 1999

As some of you will know, AnCnoc have been releasing whisky from consecutive years over the past wee while. I’ve previously reviewed the 1997 vintage while Graeme has given his thoughts on the 1998 vintage. AnCnoc have released the most recent member of this series and, unsurprisingly, it’s the 1999 vintage. This whisky was matured [...]...
