You know nothing, Grey Goose

For a humble whisky blogger used to Charlie MacLean’s moustache being the hottest celebrity on the events circuit, a bash such as last night’s Grey Goose martini extravaganza at Devil’s Advocate in Edinburgh could be a bit of a shock. Accustomed to sitting firmly in the middle of the world coolness scale, not quite your [...]...

Paul McDonagh of Bon Accord – In 140 Or Less

Author - Caroline DewarAnother in our occasional series of Tweet-style interviews. As always, it’s 140 characters or less (we don’t count the spaces) in the answers from Paul McDonagh. Paul is passionate about his Scotch whisky and the owner of Glasgow’s finest whisky bar, the Bon Accord. A man who’s enjoying the bar life.

What’s the view from your office window – if you have one?

I don’t have one but I do have some nice bottles of whisky to look at.

Good answer! How long have you been owner at the Bon Accord?

This is my 14th year but it seems like...

Highland Park Dark Origins

Highland Park’s latest offering sees them return to their roots, and I mean really return to their roots: pre-distillery foundation roots. Legend has it that the founder of Highland Park, Magnus Eunson, was a beadle and butcher by day, and one of the most cunning and ingenious smugglers of illicit whisky by night. In honour [...]...

Teaninich 1983 (SV cask #8071)

Whiskyfun was particularly fond of this Teaninich 1983 bottled by Signatory . The distillery maj not enjoy big fame, at least not among single malt lovers, but it’s highly respected by blenders and a standard ‘workhorse’ for Compass Box for example. I don’t think I’ve ever had bad Teaninich and some of them have been really nice surprises.

Teaninich 1983 (SV cask #8071)Teaninich 29 yo 1983 (57,5%, Signatory Vintage 2013, refill butt #8071, 471 btl.)

Nose: graphite and industrial oils. Paraffin and plastics. Limestone and brine. Surprisingly mineral. There’s a sweetness in the background, a slightly synthetic one of unripe pineapple, green banana...

Kummel – calming those first-tee nerves

Rocky as a golfer

My typical weekend attire

There are many things that work together. Some need no explanation: soap and water, meat and potatoes or fish and chips; some are a little more obscure – Danny DeVito and Arnie , ham and Coca-Cola , strawberries and black pepper. Another combination that fits into the latter category is kummel and golf.  With the 143rd Open Championship already under way, I decided to investigate the little-known link, noticing our golf-club customers were buying an unusually large amount. Anne Bennett, steward at the prestigious Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire (which held the first Open in 1860) says they...
