Glenmorangie 18 Years

Not sure why this is called ‘Extremely Rare’ because obviously it isn’t, but anyway, it’s simply the Glenmorangie 18 Year Old .

Matured in American white oak but about 30% of the spirit used was finished in Oloroso sherry casks for three years.

imageGlenmorangie 18 yo ‘Extremely Rare’ (43%, OB +/- 2018)

Nose: rather light, with the distillery’s typical fruitiness. Yellow plums and apricots mainly. Also gooseberries and oranges. Hints of vanilla cake, honey and almonds. Floral notes too (orange blossom, geranium). Mouth: sweet, bright and fruity, showing tangerines, tinned pears, oranges and pink grapefruit. Almost tropical with...

Hazelburn 13 Years Oloroso Cask (2018)

Hazelburn 13 Year Old Oloroso is the unpeated and triple distilled Springbank spirit aged in a mix of first-fill and refill sherry casks. They already had a 2003 version of this in 2017 – we’re trying the 2004 vintage bottled in april 2018.

imageHazelburn 13 yo 2004 ‘Oloroso Cask Matured’ (47,4%, OB 2018, 9000 btl.)

Nose: the typical mix of marzipan and pencil shavings that I always get in Hazelburn. Hints of damp floors. Blackcurrants. A bit of vanilla cake and candied ginger. Just light sherry, with some raisins and plums. Even some rosewater lokum. Mouth: quite sweet...

Glen Moray 2007 (Asta Morris)

After the excellent Caol Ila 2011 from Asta Morris , here’s another bottling from their most recent line-up: Glen Moray 2007 . Probably the total opposite of the the Caol Ila: coming from a fresh bourbon cask, this should be fresh and summery.

imageGlen Moray 2007 (50%, Asta Morris 2018, fresh bourbon cask, 270 btl.)

Nose: very fresh indeed, with pleasant honey, sweet barley and lots of yellybeans. Pineapple cubes. Hints of raspberry bubblegum, some floral / grassy notes and ginger. Vanilla. Light waxy touches. Rather summery, but very vivid with decent complexity. Mouth: same vibrant character. Citrus,...

Glenmorange Grand Vintage 1990

This Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1990 was the first of a new series of vintage malts called Bond House No. 1 – the largest bonded warehouse built at the distillery during the 19th century. This particular year was troublesome as the barley harvest delivered bad results.

The 1990 Grand Vintage is a 26 years old mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.

imageGlenmorangie Vintage 1990 (43%, OB ‘Bond House No 1’ 2016, 5000 btl.)

Nose: very fresh and forthcoming, with a slightly tropical side. Juicy pears, pineapples, tangerines and orange syrup. Quite sherbety. Also hints of heather honey and floral...

Ardmore 14 Years (Boutique-y Whisky)

That Boutique-y Whisky Company recently presented this smoky Ardmore 14 Year Old . Not much more to say…

imageArdmore 14 yo (49,5%, That Boutique-y Whisky Company 2018, Batch #5, 582 btl.)

Nose: quite gristy, mildly smoky, showing hints of wet gravel. Hints of tequila and a green fruitiness. A little wax. Walnuts and hints of herbs. Not the slightly tropical fruit notes that we like in 1990s Ardmore, this is more mineral and earthy. Mouth: quite oily, close to the raw materials again. Sweet peat, biscuity notes, bread, lemons and nice hints of peaches. Spicy notes, think chilli...

Kilchoman Loch Gorm (2018)

I tried the first release of Kilchoman Loch Gorm back in 2013 , I think it deserves a new look. The 2018 edition has been released not long ago.

This 6th edition is still a vatting of sherry casks, more precisely 19 Oloroso butts filled in 2007, 2008 and 2011. This includes some of the oldest sherry casks that have been released to date.

imageKilchoman Loch Gorm (46%, OB 2018, 15.000 btl.)

Nose: a really nice sootiness, grilled fish and cigar smoke. Hay and distant farmy notes. Hints of black olives. Sweeter notes underneath, cinnamon buns and cooked...

Rock Oyster / Cask Strength / 18 Years

Rock Oyster is the Islands components in the Remarkable Regional Malts series from Douglas Laing . It is a blended malt composed with maritime malts distilled on Orkney, Arran, Jura and Islay.

International Oyster Day was celebrated yesterday (5th of augusti), a perfect occasion to have a look at the Rock Oyster range, as Douglas Laing encourages you to sprinkle it over oysters to give them an interesting twist.

imageRock Oyster (46,8%, Douglas Laing 2016)

Nose: coastal, briney notes and dried seaweed up front. Some herbal notes (rosemary) and light hints of ashy peat. Green apple. Clean notes...

Caol Ila 2011 (Asta Morris)

Asta Morris has just released three new bottlings:

  • Caol Ila 2011 – sherry butt
  • Benrinnes 2010 – sherry cask
  • Glen Moray 2007 – fresh bourbon cask

I had a sneak preview and I can tell you they are true bang-for-your-buck whiskies: all in the € 50-65 price range and simply great drinking whiskies. My favourite is probably this 7 years old Caol Ila 2011 .

imageCaol Ila 2011 (56,1%, Asta Morris 2018, sherry butt ref. AM 055, 580 btl.)

Bunnahabhain 11 Years (Boutique-y Whisky)

This Bunnahabhain 11 Year Old was recently bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company . It is unpeated and from its profile I would guess it relies heavily on spirit from refill sherry casks (no official confirmation though).

imageBunnahabhain 11 yo (49,5%, That Boutique-y Whisky Company 2018, Batch #5, 1091 btl.)

Nose: orchard fruits (apple peels, pears) with a nice buttery side as well as hints of damp chalk and hay. A sea breeze. Some leafy notes and winter spice. Marzipan. Bread crust. Rather complex. Mouth: quite a dry profile and fairly coastal, with clear salty notes. There are...

Glen Garioch 1976 (SMWS 19.1)

This is the first Glen Garioch ever bottled by the Scotch Maltwhisky Society . A 1976 cask, merely 8 or 9 years old at the time.

imageGlen Garioch 1976 (50.4%, Scotch Maltwhisky Society 1985, SMWS 19.1)

Nose: entirely on herbal notes, dried grass and minerals. Wet limestone, olive brine, hay, sooty notes and peat. Also lemony sharpness and a bit of lacquer paint and metal polish. Delicate but nice. Light fragrant notes in the background, perfumy but not disturbing. Mouth: more disturbing. Barley sugar, the same coastal sharpness and brine but also plain FWP now. Cologne...

Highland Park Spirit of the Bear // Highland Park Wings of the Eagle

image

In my latest whisky news overview I talked about the new travel retail whiskies from Highland Park distillery.

Here is my first review of two expressions, the Highland Park Spirit of the Bear (a no age statement releases, primarily aged in sherry-seasoned American oak casks) and Highland Park Wings of the Eagle , a 16 years old whisky matured in both sherry-seasoned European oak casks and American oak casks.

I’ve heard some critical remarks about the distillery’s urge to come up with marketing stories and farfetched names, even when the Norse legends seem exhausted, but let’s discuss that some other...

Irish Malt 1992 (Liquid Treasures)

After the excellent  Irish Malt 1993 for TWE we tried last week, here’s another undisclosed Irish single malt , this time from the 1992 vintage which we hadn’t seen before.

imageIrish Malt 26 yo 1992 (48,3%, Liquid Treasures ‘Summer Dram’ 2018, bourbon barrel, 172 btl.)

Nose: a very warm fruitiness with lots of beehive notes. Wax, various honeys, pollen. Reminds us of a Caperdonich 1972 in a way. Honeydew melons, mango and banana, hints of kiwi. A whiff of chlorophyll. A very warm expression, quite superb with nice notes of old wood as well. Mouth: sweet and fruity....

Inchgower 2002 (Gordon MacPhail)

I adored some older 1970s Inchgower but I haven’t found any true highflyers among younger bottlings. We’ll give it another shot with this Inchgower 2002 bottled by Gordon & MacPhail in their Connoisseurs Choice range.

imageInchgower 2002 (46%, Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice 2015, refill sherry hogshead)

Nose: good, quite rich with fresh oranges and rhubard, as well as dried fruits (sultanas, dried apple pieces, fruit cake). Floral honey. All this on a background of cereals and whiffs of old wood. Mouth: sweet but at the same time a bit thin. Raisins, toffee, orange peels and yellow apples....

Unnamed Orkney 2005 (SV for Flanders)

This unnamed single malt distilled on Orkney in 2005 was selected from the Signatory Vintage stocks and bottled for a series of whisky shops in Flanders, Belgium.

imageOrkney 13 yo 2005 (56,2%, Signatory Vintage Un-Chillfiltered for Flanders’ Finest Cask Selection 2018, hogshead DRU17/A63 + 65, 342 btl.)

Nose: excellent balance. There’s a sweet side to it (sweet honey and citrus candy, sugared almonds) but also a nice seaside freshness. Fresh herbs and heather. Vanilla. Apricot skins. An almost medicinal touch of tiger balm. Crushed peppercorns. Mouth: beautiful sooty notes, lots of herbs and mineral notes. Citrus green tea....

Dalmore 15 Years

After my positive experience with the Dalmore 18 Year Old, I thought I should try the Dalmore 15 Year Old as well. It is initially matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished for three years in three types of sweet (or sweetened) sherry: Amoroso, Apostoles and Matusalem casks. The spirits are then married in an upstanding sherry butt.

imageDalmore 15 yo (40%, OB +/- 2017)

Nose: typical oranges, juicy raisins and toffee. Behind it is more obvious wood than in the 18, a slightly peppery kick and cinnamon. Light tobacco. Some apple pie too. Mouth: again less thick than...

Irish Malt 1993 (Whisky Agency for TWE)

Let’s just review the second fruit bomb bottled by The Whisky Agency for The Whisky Exchange right away, why not?

This is an undisclosed Irish single malt whiskey distilled in 1993 (a vintage we haven’t seen among these undisclosed Irish malts so far).

imageIrish Single Malt 24 yo 1993 (48,2%, The Whisky Agency for The Whisky Exchange 2018, bourbon barrel, 209 btl.)

Nose: very fruity, but after the Bowmore (which I tried first) this is more on lychee, mango and bananas. Sweeter with more vanilla and honey than the Irish 1991s for instance. Apple rose pastries. Pears...

Old Pulteney 2006

Early 2018 Old Pulteney announced a trio of new travel retail exclusives. There was a 2002 single cask for the Viking Line, the 1990 vintage (which already existed as a  limited edition ) and this Old Pulteney 2006 vintage .

It was matured in just a handful of first-fill ex-bourbon casks.

imageOld Pulteney 2006 (46%, OB 2017, 100 cl)

Nose: a young, distillate-driven version. Some fruity notes (apples, white grapes, lemons) with honey, toffee and custard notes but also a light chalky touch. Dried barley. Hints of sunflower oil. Light mint. Mouth: quite sweet now, with pear candy,...
