The Macallan Sienna Review

Last week Macallan announced a new series with four expressions, all without age statement, in 4 different price points. Are you having some deja vu? Because I did.

For a moment I thought it must be some reposting of the original 1824 series announcement which incidentally happened exactly 4 years ago in oktober. But a second and deeper look revealed the truth of a new Travel Retail series which will completely replace the 1824 series and all other TR expression starting januari 2018.

But the discussion on this series in one of my whisky FB groups, turned to the 1824...

Balvenie Tun 1509, Michter’s 25, High West More New Whisky

This week is all about the limited-edition whisky. Balvenie is rolling out its fourth batch of Tun 1509, an annual release that blends various casks in a marrying vat. The NAS single malt is pricy, but scores well—91 points each for  Batch 1 and Batch 3 .

Michter’s is offering a 25 year old bourbon for the first time in nine years. Michter’s didn’t make any of the whiskey: its Shively distillery has only been open since 2012, though the company was making whiskey at other distilleries for several years before then. But Michter’s president Joseph Magliocco says this bourbon’s...

Glen Elgin 18yo – Diageo Special Releases 2017

Wrapping up the first week of the Diageo 2017 Special Releases reviews is an 18yo Glen Elgin matured entirely in ex-bodega European oak butts. Not a bad way to start a Friday, and certainly not a bad way to lead us into next week’s line-up which consists of Blair Athol 23yo, Port Dundas 52yo, Convalmore [...]...

Balvenie Peat Week 14 Years

image

The Balvenie Peat Week 14 Years Old (2002 Vintage) is the result of trials undertaken in 2001 by Malt Master David Stewart, at a time when very few Speyside distilleries used peat in whisky production. Ever since then they’ve had one Peat Week per year, doing peated runs using 100% Highland peat to dry their malted barley (30 ppm phenols but the non-phenolic particles are more prominent).

This is the first wide-scale release of this style (following a peated Triple Cask for travel retail in juni 2017), matured in American oak casks. The distillery already hinted at the release of...

The Dalmore 50 Years

This is post n° 2500, I can’t believe we’ve gotten this far with just one liver! Today’s dram had to be something special…

Master Distiller Richard ‘The Nose’ Paterson celebrated his 50th year in the whisky industry last year, and at the beginning of 2017 the distillery presented the limited edition The Dalmore 50 Year Old .

Its journey started the 31st of december 1966 in American oak barrels. In 2003 it was transferred into Matusalem sherry casks from González Byass. In 2012 it went into Colheita 1938 Port pipes from Graham’s for four years until being finessed...

Tamnavulin 1992 (Cadenhead)

image

I love the Cask Ends concept of Cadenhead’s. You get some ‘leftover bottles’ (either 20 cl or 70 cl ) from casks that were released in an official form earlier. Especially the 20 cl bottle is an idea that more bottlers should adopt.

I got this Tamnavulin 1992 as a nice birthday gift the other day, hooray! The picture below is of the original bottling of course. It’s one of the least featured distilleries on this blog… It didn’t really exist as a single malt until the Tamnavulin Double Cask was launched last year (I’ll review that one soon).

Glen Scotia 18 Year Old (2017) Review

imageLast month Glen Scotia distillery, one of three Campbeltown distilleries, relaunched their Glen Scotia 18 Year Old expression. It’s replacing the old 18 Year old expression that exists since 2013 which maj be familiar to you because of the blue colors theme of the bottle and label (see image on the right).

So only 4 years later, the expression is coming back in a new and more mainstream-y (or perhaps should we see less avant-garde?) packaging and coloring. But the big news are that it also boasts a new liquid recipe. the old version was matured exclusively in ex-bourbon casks...

Rosebank Distillery Will Reopen

Ian Macleod Distillers announced that it will reopen Rosebank Distillery after acquiring the trademark from Diageo and agreeing to acquire the site from Scottish Canals. The project—which includes a visitor center, along with production and warehousing—will cost £10 million to £12 million ($13.2 million to $15.9 million), and construction is projected to take about two years, with a goal to begin distillation by 2019. In the meantime, Ian Macleod has also acquired all Diageo’s remaining stocks of Rosebank whisky—just “several dozen casks,” according to Ian Macleod’s operations director Gordon Doctor. The company will release that old whisky bit by bit...
