Benromach 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2017 Batch #1 Review

Sorry about dropping out for a while during Feis but life took over with extra work, other projects and serious read binge (The 5 books of The Demon Cycle. Not bad at all). But now it’s time to get back into the reviewing mode.

Although I owe you three reviews from Feis (Kilchoman, Bunnahabhain and Ardbeg), those will integrated into the schedule in the coming weeks and today I wanna focus on an interesting whisky – An official Benromach 12 Year Old in Cask strength bottled exclusively for Taiwan market.

It’s always fun to lay hands on a bottle destined...

Fill Your Thermos With Whisky Cocktails

The humble Thermos. Generically known as a vacuum flask, it’s been around for well over a century, accompanying some of the most famous expeditions in the world—Shackleton at the South Pole, Roosevelt in the Belgian Congo, even the Wright Brothers during an early flight. Soldiers have carried the Thermos into battle, while doctors use it to transport plasma, insulin, and other substances. Its vacuum-sealed design has been applied in research across a number of scientific fields. Not bad for an insulated vessel best known for carrying mom’s homemade soup to school or filling with hot chocolate for an autumn hayride....

5 Whiskies That Support Charitable Causes

The taste of a fine whisky in the company of good friends just makes you feel good. Choosing a whisky that gives to a worthy cause, whether it’s conservation , military veterans , or historical preservation, can make the moment even more satisfying.

When you sip some Macallan or Highland Park this holiday season, raise a toast to Edrington , the company that owns the brands and the largest independent grant-making trust in Scotland. The Robertson sisters, whose grandfather founded Edrington, set up The Robertson Trust , which remains Edrington’s largest shareholder and allocates all its dividends to charitable giving....

Can These Devices Make Whisky Taste Better?

We normally equate devices that purport to improve our whisky with Ponzi schemes, snake oil, and the ‘Spanish Prisoner’ ruse. However, would-be whisky alchemists continue to conjure up devices that pledge to work miracles. In the interest of science, our tasting panel put these products’ claims to the taste test with a basic bourbon and blended scotch, both priced around $20, and a $40 white whiskey.

The Best Empire Ryes Coming Out of New York

In 2017, a group of New York distillers announced the creation of a new style of whiskey: Empire rye. Any whiskey so labeled must be made in New York from at least 75% New York State rye grain and aged in charred new oak barrels for at least 2 years, along with a few other requirements intended to ensure top quality.

The initial group of distillers—which included nine distilleries located all over the state, from New York City up to Rochester—each released an Empire rye to kick off the bold and ambitious new designation, and Whisky Advocate tasted them all....

Highland Park The Light, New Booker’s More New Whisky

Summer is officially upon us, as of juni 21, and there are lots of new whiskies to celebrate that occasion. In fact,  Highland Park ‘s latest release specifically honors the longest day of the year, and the lengthy daylight hours that occur in the Orkney Islands during the summer months. Highland Park The Light is a counterpart to The Dark , which came out last december. Aged only in refill American oak sherry casks, it is 17 years old and costs $300, with 4,500 bottles available in the U.S.

Meanwhile, the newest Booker’s bourbon is named Backyard BBQ, commemorating the...

Tamdhu: Dalbeallie Dram 120th Anniversary Cask

It was a busy old start to month at Tamdhu, what with them releasing two new expressions within days of each other; the Dalbeallie Dram and 120th Anniversary Single Cask bottling. The Dalbeallie Dram was released to coincide with the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival whereas the 2002 single cask release was chosen by the [...]...

Benriach 10yo Triple Distilled

The Benriach distillery is affectionately known as ‘The Lab’ among its employees, and it’s not difficult to see why – a mixture of peated, unpeated, double distilled, and triple distilled spirit is produced before being matured in any and every (legal) type of cask you can imagine. The production of triple distilled spirit goes back [...]...

Singleton Malt Master’s Selection

You’ll have noticed we’re not the best at time keeping here at EWB. Meeting us for a pint at 7pm? We’ll be there at half past. Tasting starts at 8pm sharp? We’ll nonchalantly rock up at 8:05pm. Whisky festival begins at midday? See you at one-ish. In my defence, my most recent fashionably-late-to-the-party appearance is [...]...

Highland Park The Light 17yo

Highland Park launched The Light a little while back, completing their two-part series which began with, you guessed it, The Dark. With the first expression being matured entirely in European Oak ex-sherry casks, this one has been matured exclusively in American Oak casks for 17 years. Highland Park The Light 17 years old 52.9% ABV [...]...

New Signatory Glenlivets – decades apart

We like working with Signatory Vintage . They’re well-known for having frankly ridiculous warehouses, packed with some of the best whisky in Scotland, and we’re always happy when they let us have a look at what they have maturing.

Our latest selections from their treasure trove are a pair of whiskies that couldn’t be more different, but at the same time share a common source – they’re both from Glenlivet: Signatory Glenlivet 1981 36 Years Old and Signatory Glenlivet 2007 11 Years Old .

Despite there being 26 years between the whiskies, Glenlivet didn’t change much between the two days...
